What type of program is right for my child?  (i.e. Should I sign my child up for Individual or group tutoring?)
What’s right for your child depends on your child’s skill level, educational goals, and learning preferences.  At the first meeting, we will assess your child’s skills and then discuss with you the best program for your child’s needs.  Generally speaking, students needing more individual attention are better suited to individual tutoring.

What grade and ability levels do you tutor?
Ms. G’s offers custom-tailored learning programs to K-12 students for the entire range of skill levels and abilities:   Remedial, Regular and Accelerated/Honors. We offer instruction in Mathematics, Science and Language.

How affordable is Ms. G’s?
Extremely affordable.  We offer the best rates in the business for small group/individual instruction.  Weekly tutoring typically runs between $1,000 and $3,000 per school year depending on your child’s individual needs.  In most cases, we are only slightly more expensive than enrolling your child in a 10-student class at another center where he/she will receive very little, if any, individual attention.  We think you’ll agree that the substantially higher level of personal attention your child receives at Ms G’s is well worth any small difference in price.

What are your tutors’ qualifications?
Our tutors are selected for their outstanding teaching skills and unique ability to engage students with Ms. G’s methods.  All our tutors have at least a college degree, and many come with Masters degrees, PhDs or other advanced degrees. All Ms. G’s tutors must pass a rigorous interview screening and training process in order to teach at our center.

Why are Ms. G’s methods the best?
Because we’ve tested them in real classroom settings with thousands of actual students over a 25 year period.  Our research has identified the very best way to teach every concept your child needs to know.  Ms. G’s tutors use only those methods that are proven to maximize your child’s subject matter comprehension and retention, cognitive efficiency and learning enjoyment.

What exactly are the “Ms. G’s Methods”?

They are highly effective, student-friendly techniques that make your child’s learning experience as enjoyable as possible.  We combine curricular ordering principles, powerful visual demonstration and effective knowledge integration techniques to deliver the highest quality instruction services to your child.

We could describe in intricate detail some examples of Ms. G’s innovative methods such as our “Sum and Product Factor Method”, “Circle-Line Prime Factor Tree Method”, or our “No-Pencil SAT prep method” but only by watching our tutors interact with students will you truly begin to appreciate just how powerful and effective our methods really are.  We encourage you to visit our center and sit in on a tutoring session to experience first-hand why Ms. G’s methods are the best in the business (please contact us to arrange an exploratory visit).

Do I need to sign a contract?
No.  There are no contracts at Ms. G’s whatsoever.  Parents enroll their children for a block of monthly sessions at a time and may cancel at any time for any reason whatsoever.  Please see our “Rates & Policies” for further details.

What is the Ms. G’s pedagogical philosophy?
Other centers claim they adapt their teaching methods to the student – the so-called “multi-modality” approach to teaching.  Though we find the multi-modality approach useful in educating our students, we believe that methodological consistency is actually far more important than multi-modality in helping our students succeed.  We’ve developed a universal set of methods that every student can use to build foundational skills or sharpen their knowledge - the quintessential “less is more” approach to learning.  We’re not about endlessly drilling mechanics or teaching mental shortcuts which can ultimately harm a child’s cognitive development.  We offer a learner-friendly structure that emphasizes deep understanding over memorization.  No other approach has proven more successful.

Why is Ms. G’s better than other centers?
Four main reasons:  (1) We teach our students innovative methods that have passed the scrutiny of years of scientifically rigorous classroom testing and refinement, (2) We are adamant about only hiring the very best local instructors, training them intensively in our proven methods and then monitoring them closely as they work with your child, (3) Our Dual Mastery and MicroSchool approaches to education build fundamental skills while enabling students to succeed in class today, and (4) Our “Curriculum-Free” orientation means we work WITH your child’s teachers and their lesson plans instead of AROUND (or in spite of) them.  We believe that getting acquainted with your child’s teacher is every bit as important as getting acquainted with your child.

How does Group Tutoring Work?
There are two kinds of Group Tutoring at Ms. G’s.  With “Same Class” Group Tutoring, your child is paired with one or two other students of roughly equal ability who are currently taking the same class as your child.  The tutor then leads a mini-class interspersed with individual reinforcement and assessment activities directed towards each child in the group.  With “Different Class” Group Tutoring, students enrolled in different classes (or moving at different paces through similar material) take turns being taught, being assessed and working independently as the tutor roams among the group.

Can my child work on homework at Ms. G’s?
Yes.  Usually we devote roughly half the session to homework and the other half to reviewing and previewing material, though we are always willing to vary our teaching formats to meet the specific needs of any student.

Will my child be using their classroom textbook or other materials provided by Ms. G’s?
Both.  Though we are a “curriculum-free” center, we do utilize a number of high-quality supplemental resources (i.e. question banks, textbooks, worksheets, etc.) for reinforcement and enrichment when necessary.

Will Ms. G’s have another copy of my child’s textbook to use at the center?
Yes, we will typically have your child’s textbook available at the center.  That means your child doesn’t have to worry about bringing the book to the center every week (and we guarantee kids will forget!).

What technologies does Ms. G’s use at the center?
The old-fashioned ones:  Paper, pens, pencils, whiteboards, occassionally a calculator, and, of course, the most important technology (and really the only one that matters) – our top-notch tutoring staff.  In this day and age of the Internet and Digital Media, other centers sit your child in front of a computer screen for hours and expect them to learn.  We don’t believe this is a productive way to educate.  We believe an engaging teacher-student interaction builds subject mastery and appreciation far more effectively than any impersonal computer software program ever could.

Should I let my child’s teacher know that he/she is going to Ms. G’s?
It’s up to you.  Many teachers (especially the ones who recommend our services) are quite receptive to their students being tutored outside of school and are happy to see their abilities and confidence improve over time.  Our curriculum-free approach is designed to minimize teachers’ enduring fears of burdening their students with a conflicting curriculum and preserves the quality of the relationship between your child and his/her teacher.  With your permission, we can contact your child’s teacher to discuss the best course of action for your child.

Will my child be assessed before starting?
Yes, an informal assessment is given to every child who enrolls at our center.  We use the results of the assessment to help determine the optimal learning program for your child.

Most other centers claim they can raise my child’s grade level by two or more years or grades in only a few sessions.  Can you give me the same guarantee?
We don’t like to make empty promises, but we can say that no student has ever left our center for reasons of non-improvement.  What’s more, each child tends to improve at his or her own personal pace, so it would be pointless to provide a universal estimate of how quickly the “average” child improves.  We can confidently say that our customers have been quite satisfied with our services since the day we opened (we are always happy to provide references).  The fact that your child is receiving individual attention from a tutor means that your child’s skills are likely to improve.   The fact that your child is receiving individual attention from a Ms. G’s tutor means that your child’s skills are likely to improve substantially.

Does Ms. G’s have a summer program?
While we don’t have a formal summer program at Ms. G’s, we do offer the same instructional services over the summertime that we offer during the school year.  Many students find the summer a great time to review the prior year’s material and get a head start on next year’s topics.
